Roger and I have just finished our third season in Kennebunkport as the Innkeepers at the 1802 House Bed and Breakfast. And what a great time we are having in our new life in this wonderful coastal Maine community.
It’s hard to say what our favorite time of year is. We’ve found that many visitors don’t realize that Kennebunkport is a year round destination – with some great activities in the winter months. I know, the summer months are wonderful – and crazy busy. Everything is open, the restaurants in this area are incredible and whether you prefer Goose Rocks over Gooches Beach, both are beautiful long sandy stretches of coastline perfect for soaking up some sun.
Our guests will know that my ‘hint and tip’ is to come in September if you want to beat the crowds. The weather is still good so you can sit on the beach, the restaurants are all still open, but it’s a lot quieter in town.
Having said all that, we have to admit that our favorite time of year is kicking off as we speak. The 33rd Annual Kennebunkport Christmas Prelude is officially underway. The holiday festivities run over two weeks each year. This year it is going from Tuesday, Dec 2nd – Sunday, Dec. 14th.
The town really does enjoy celebrating this holiday season with all of the businesses going out of their way to deck the halls. And there’s no shortage of things to do throughout this magical season. A full list of events can be found at www.christmasprelude.com.
The first weekend has traditionally been the most popular. However, an increased focus by local businesses on activities for the second weekend means it doesn’t matter when you come, you are assured to have a busy, festive stay. Here’s a few of our favorite things to do:
- The Dock Square Christmas tree is in place and ready for the tree lighting ceremony on Friday, Dec. 5th , and again on Friday, Dec. 12th. The tree lighting is accompanied by Christmas caroling courtesy of the Kennebunk High School choir. The second Friday tree lighting ceremony is capped off by the 4th Annual Christmas fireworks display. Baby it’s cold outside so bring your hats and gloves!
- Holiday shopping is amazing. There are so many craft fairs and local shops open that you will want to plan your itinerary to make sure you get to all of the places you want to see and visit! A lot of interesting gifts from local Maine artists out there.
- The Historic Inns of Kennebunkport host a House Tour of each of the four Inns on Saturday, Dec. 13th. This is a great opportunity to see the historic properties done up in their holiday finest. The tour runs from 1:30pm – 3:30pm. The inns will be serving seasonal beverages and cookies. Tickets are $10 per person, can be purchased at any of the four Inns with proceeds donated to the local food bank.
- A final must see is the Historic Inn annual Walk to Bethlehem. Join the candlelit procession and follow Mary and Joseph as they look for shelter at three of the Inns. Hot chocolate and cookies are served in the manger. Procession begins at the River Green, 6 Pleasant St., Kennebunkport at 4:30pm.
If you’ve never experienced Christmas Prelude, we hope you will join us next year. Rooms book quickly so reserve your room early.
We wish you all a very Happy Holiday Season!
