We don’t have to tell you that the holidays look a bit different this year, not enough people round the table to justify buying a whole Turkey for thanksgiving, our daughter will be joining us through an iPad this Christmas from the other side of the Atlantic, it all seems a bit lackluster… but when you look under the surface, you can find the gems and the wonderful things we’ve been able to accomplish in this strange year.
Here at the inn, we used our time to get some big projects done and prepare for the next few years as the world shifts back to its normal routine. We’ve learned more about video calling than we ever thought we would but it’s brought our spread out family closer in new ways and we couldn’t be more thankful.
Of course there are new traditions being created but there are also traditions being kept alive. One special tradition is the annual Prelude festival in Kennebunkport, altered slightly for safety but still the most magical time of the year. We’ve been planning for months, watching the news, reviewing the changes that have had to be made and we have a schedule of amazing events available for people everywhere, as well as some truly wonderful in person events that are sure to get you in the Christmas spirit.
Prelude this year runs from Dec 3rd to Dec 13th and you can find a full calendar of events on https://www.christmasprelude.com/ but as always, we’ve handpicked some special events that are not to be missed!
First up is our own Historic Inns of Kennebunkport Scavenger Hunt! Starting on the 3rd and going right the way through the 13th, check in and snap a photo of you at a number of different locations to win some amazing prizes from your favorite inns in town. Like us on our Facebook page for more information.
We also have the Christmas Prelude Cottage Crawl, which takes place across the week, and includes scenic tours of the town, hot chocolate, and shopping. On each Saturday, once you’re done seeing the sights, head over to the 1802 House for our Christmas on the Porch event with mulled wine, roasted chestnuts, and great company.
Our tree lighting and Santa’s arrival on a lobster boat will be virtual this year, and streamable from anywhere through the Prelude website. We also have our annual Candlelit tours of the Historic Inns available digitally for those who are interested in learning more about our wonderful properties and their rich history.
Midweek magic sees in a number of wonderful virtual and in person events, like Passport to Prelude and the North Pole at the Nonantum Resort, along with so many other events and online challenges to get you involved and in the spirit, no matter where you are in the world. Old Vines will still host its outdoor market, with gifts for everyone on your nice list. Before you leave town, be sure to mail your letter to Santa at the Open Air Curbside event at the Cape Porpoise Kitchen to make sure he gets everything right this year. Because after all, you deserve to treat yourself now more than ever.
So get to Kennebunkport to kick off the Christmas season in style and help us celebrate the wonderful things that have happened this year! As always, we’ll put the kettle on.
